How the card keeps door access and login separate

The MIFARE DESFire access application and the FIDO2 authenticator share one secure element but never share data. Three mechanisms keep them apart:

  • Explicit selection. A reader addresses one application at a time by its application identifier. The door reader selects the DESFire application and uses DESFire commands; a browser or identity provider selects the FIDO2 applet and speaks CTAP2. The card operating system routes each command only to the selected application, so the FIDO2 applet never sees door-reader traffic and the DESFire application never sees a WebAuthn challenge.
  • Separate storage. Each application owns its own files, counters and state. The secure element enforces this with the Java Card firewall and GlobalPlatform security domains: no applet can read another applet’s memory, and there is no command that dumps the card.
  • Keys bound to their application. The DESFire AES keys that open doors and the FIDO2 private keys that sign logins live in separate key containers. The FIDO2 private keys are generated on the card and never leave it; the DESFire application cannot read them, and the FIDO2 applet cannot read the door keys.

The secure element is an NXP JCOP 4 P71 chip certified Common Criteria EAL 6+; the FIDO2 applet is FIDO Certified Level 1; the DESFire application is a licensed NXP implementation with no separate certification claimed. Losing the card therefore means revoking two credentials, the door credential and the FIDO2 registration, and neither reveals the other.

Which reader each function needs

  • Door access uses the building’s own DESFire readers over the contactless interface.
  • FIDO2 sign-in works over NFC with a phone or a USB contactless reader, and over the contact interface with a USB contact reader; on Windows the Cryptnox Click-to-Tap reader completes the user-presence check with one press while the card stays in the slot.

Is the FIDO 2 Card with MIFARE® DESFire® compatible with my devices?

The card works with Windows, macOS and iOS. On Android it is supported for U2F/CTAP1 logins. Tap it to an NFC-capable phone, or use it with a USB card reader on a computer — on Windows the Cryptnox Click-to-Tap reader adds a virtual tap button, so the card never has to leave the slot.

What certifications and technology does your FIDO 2 card have?

Besides being equipped with FIDO2 (CTAP2) & U2F (CTAP1) RFID and MIFARE® DESFire® EV2 (Memory 4K), our FIDO 2 card features a Level 1 certification, and the secure chip comes with a Common Criteria EAL6+ certification. Both are independent, third-party certifications of the card and of its secure element.

What happens if I lose my FIDO 2 card?

We advise that you always have a backup method of authentication in a situation where you lose your FIDO 2 key. You can always get another FIDO key and authenticate it with online services to serve as a backup.

A lost card does not by itself give anyone access to your accounts. Each credential is unique to the service it was registered with, the card carries no personal identity information, and anyone who found it would still need your PIN.

How does the FIDO 2 card with MIFARE® DESFire® work?

FIDO 2 technology eliminates concerns about insecure logins and difficult-to-remember passwords. Presently, a large number of online platforms (including Bank of America and Google) now allow users to use FiDO 2 security keys to authenticate their login.

What’s best about FIDO2 cards such as Cryptnox is their ease of use. No complicated login process. All you need to do is tap the card to your device over NFC, or seat it in a USB card reader.
